Cat Beads Bracelet

Meanings for Stones by KERI OHARA

As a child, I learned to make beaded jewelry from my mother. But there was a time, many years ago, that I learned something from women that I barely knew. Truth be known, that happens to me often, but this specific information was about the meanings for stones. I was working as a Certified Childbirth Educator for a hospital in Seattle and during the course of an 8 week series many of the women and their partners would really connect with each other. Often, on the last class of the series they would bring gifts for the other expecting mothers. These gifts were always something that was intended to welcome their baby, give them strength in labor or to use as a focal point during their labors. I was moved by this gesture time and time again, as were the recipients of the gifts. This happened enough that I started using a Birthing Bracelet idea for each of my future classes. I asked everyone to bring one bead for every expecting mother by the last class. I would bring the supplies and we would string the beads into bracelets that they could keep forever. First each woman would hand out their beads and share the reason for the bead they chose. Many times it was the color, or the healing properties of the stone, and often it was a charm that held a special meaning. Over the course of many classes I learned the properties of stones that I hadn’t even heard of. I have occasionally researched stones for custom orders and the more information I receive about the recipient of the jewelry the more personal and custom the pieces become. One day I ran into a woman that had taken my class years prior and she told me that she wore the bracelet on her next pregnancy as well, and that her youngest daughter occasionally wears the bracelet. That made my day. Hopefully the following information will be helpful to you whether you are designing jewelry, buying a gift for someone, or teaching childbirth education classes:
